“Get to Know” Iodine
Why You Want & Need It
– Iodine is an element that is not only for the thyroid gland, but every cell in your body. It is in the halide group in the periodic chart. It is with bromine, fluorine, and chlorine.
– Iodine has potent antibacterial, viral, parasitic, cancer properties.
– 1.5 billion people in the world are deficient in iodine.
– Iodine deficiency can result in goiter(s).
– Iodine is found in evaporated sea water (Celtic Sea Salt).
– Iodine is not readily available on the earth’s crust
– Iodine is found in every cell in the body. The thyroid has the most.
– Iodine is also founds in the salivary glands, gastric mucosa, breasts, ovaries, and the eye. It can also result in spontaneous miscarriage.
– Iodine was discovered in 1811 by Bernard Courtois. He was making gunpowder-using product from the ocean and noticed a purple color. Iodine, or Iodes in Greek, translates to violet.
– Iodine was the first agent to be used to treat a specific condition: goiter.
– Iodine is not common in general foods. It is common in sea-based foods.
– Iodine added to table salt at 100 ppm of potassium iodide. It is estimated that less than 50% of the US population used iodized salt.
– Iodine today is added to the feed in animals.
– There are small amounts of iodine in iodized salt. Not enough to supply all the cells in the body. Pregnant women today are commonly deficient in iodine.
– The RDA of iodine was set up to prevent goiter in the thyroid.
– Iodine used to be in bread. Replace by bromine in the 1960’s.
Iodine vs. Iodide
– Iodide is the reduced form of iodine. There is an electron added to iodine which makes it a salt, hence potassium iodide. Iodine is hard to get into a solution. It was thought iodine easily converts to iodide in the intestine. It does not.
– Iodide is more specific for the thyroid gland, and why it is added as potassium iodine in salt.
– Iodine has another anti-cancer property called apoptosis, which is timed cell death. Each cell has a life cycle. Cancer cells run rampant. Iodine has been shown to induce cell death in thyroid and breast cancer cells, but negated when a goitren is given. Iodine helps the cells by stabilizing cell membranes.
– Goitrens anti-iodine/anti-thyroid, interferes with the metabolism of iodine which includes:
Bromine: Bread, soda, sport beverages, certain medications.
Chlorine: Found in municipal water, shower, dishwasher, pools, and hot tubs.
Fluorine: Toothpaste, tap water, dental work.
Soy: Found everywhere today.
– With low iodine you have an increased potential to have prostate cancer.
