The Root Cause of Hair Loss
Are you happy with your hair?
Did it used to be thick, but is now fine? Is it receding (gasp)?! Does your hairpiece match? I know these are sobering questions, but I have noticed more young men afflicted with “male pattern baldness” using ball caps to cover their premature hair loss than ever. From my experience, the most common issue creating the male hair loss pattern is stress! Stress depletes the body of minerals that are necessary for optimal hair quality.
Hair, for simple scientific understanding, is primarily protein and minerals. If you are not eating enough protein, it is possible you can have hair loss just from that alone. I notice in female patients, protein portions are limited in size because they are watching their waistlines. Those avoiding protein believe animal products equal fat, and they surely do not want any extra fat entering the system. They might also perceive high protein diets as the source of building blocks that create big, bulky muscles; however, proteins are necessary for optimal hair growth.
Is it all genetics? I am not convinced hair health patterns are genetic. What you eat and your stress level play a significant role in the quality and quantity of your hair. I do know individuals who have the body signals of subpar thyroid gland function tend to have thinning hair on the top of their heads and also thinning outer eyebrows. I have good news! If you have the right person coaching you, the process can be reversed. Yes, you read correctly! I just had someone who took off her hairpiece because her hair grew back. I hear it all the time in the office, “Dr. Bob, my hair is thick again,” or “Dr. Bob, my hair stopped falling out.” It comes down to receiving the proper nutrition.
When a young man has a diet that is focused on trans fat and does not consume other types of whole, unrefined oil (olive, flax, and coconut) their hair will suffer. The reason there is an issue with their hair, is the fact hair is not essential for your existence: Your body will divert the nutrients for hair quality control and use it for functions critical for long-term health, like muscle and bone rebuilding. I would suggest if you are 20 to 30 to 35 years old, you want to take this very seriously. Your body needs a quality source of omega-3, 6, and 9 oils for optimal function. Your body needs the oils for proper hormone operation. If your endocrine glands are not up to par, your hair will suffer the consequences.
I love how science helps us. They have created and completed scientific studies on laboratory animals wherein they restricted their diets from good oils and added unhealthy replacements: The type of oils you eat every day (fried chicken nuggets, chips, cookies, and pastries).
Animals on a diet with poor quality oils started losing their hair. This is very important-young men need good oil three times more than young ladies!! Lack of oil consumption is one of the reasons boy have ADHD more than their female counterparts. Gentleman, I would consume at least one tablespoon of flax oil daily and be sure to include olive oil. I just incorporated anchovy and sardine oil from Biotics Research into my diet that tastes great and is an excellent source of the omega-3 oils. Your body to establish and maintain optimal function uses oil.
Stress also depletes the body of minerals. Hair, as I mentioned, is made from minerals and protein. Those of you under stress will tend to have more issues with hair loss. Adrenal gland stress, which is at epidemic proportions today, is one of the main reasons young men have hair loss. You need minerals to process; if you do not have enough oil, then you do not have the minerals to compliment hair growth and restoration. You might as well go and purchase your favorite team’s cap right now.
The good news is you can reverse all of it – to a point. If you are bald, (shiny skin on the top of your head), chances are you are not going to get natural growth. But, if you shave your head since it started thinning, try some of the suggestions I mentioned.
