Grains & Oil

Summer is here – one of my favorite times of the year! How about you? This is the season when you get to experience time outside enjoying nature and traveling with friends and family. I know what else people enjoy doing this time of year – parties for graduations, picnics and family reunions. I can remember eating Jell-O with whipping cream and miniature marshmallows. Did your mom and or grandma use to make it? I also used to enjoy fresh potato salad with crispy radishes; if you eat radishes today they should be organic or grown in your own garden – otherwise they are spongy without a lot of flavor.

I thoroughly appreciate a fresh burger (chicken, turkey of beef) on the grill all year round, and nothing tastes better then a warmed bun with organic mustard and a healthy mayo (if you have a mayonnaise recipe send it my way).

I wanted to pass along a nugget that I discovered from Dr. Donald Lepore. Dr. Don wrote a book called, The Ultimate Healing System, in which he discussed facts about grains I never knew before. Dr. Lepore suggested if you are in the sun enjoying the weather and eating a burger or a hot dog with a bun (wheat, barley, rye or oat), the bun is better digested and absorbed without causing a sensitivity if there is some type of oil on it. He surmised that people may suffer with summer allergies because the sun places a demand on the oil in the system, oil which is necessary to assist in the metabolizing of grains.

Since we are entering the sunniest time of the year in most places you may consider applying butter to any type of bread you are using and or make sure you have an ample supply of oil in your system. I would encourage you to take one tablespoon of flax oil per one hundred pounds of body weight. I personally take three capsules of Biomega-3™ from Biotics Research Corp.

I also have discovered from my own research and experience with patients that any beverage or food containing caramel coloring can also create allergy symptoms. Caramel is usually sourced from barley which has gluten in the structure. Preservatives are common in our modern food chain today; sodium benzoate is a prevalent ingredient in sodas and a known allergen. Several of the larger soda producers have replaced sodium benzoate which would be an ingredient you will want to watch for if you contend with “summer allergies” or seem to suffer with frequent “summer colds”.

Metabolizing grains is fast becoming a new science. I would like to encourage you to evaluate the amount of grains you are putting on the plate or in your hand. Gluten grains may be your hidden health challenge.  If you are going to make“pasta” salad try rice pastas; a tip so the rice grain does not stick together – add a tablespoon or two of a non soy mayonnaise or rice oil to the hot noodles; butter and olive oil tends to harden and cause the noodles’ to stick together. Fresh cilantro and parsley from your herb planters add a zesty flavor to any salad pasta or green. Enjoy the summer and make time to be with your family and friends!
